What is a variable in algebra?

Algebra is a branch of mathematics that uses symbols and letters to represent numbers. One of the most important symbols used in algebra is called a variable.

A variable is a letter that represents an unknown value. The most common variables used in mathematics are x and y, but any letter can be used.

For example:

x + 3 = 7

In this equation, x is the variable because its value is unknown.

To solve the equation, we find the value of x that makes the equation true.

Step 1: Subtract 3 from both sides

x = 7 − 3

Step 2: Simplify

x = 4

This means the variable x represents the number 4 in this equation.

Variables are useful because they allow mathematicians and scientists to describe patterns, relationships, and unknown quantities.

Quick Tip:

A variable can change depending on the situation, which is why it is called a variable.
